Sewer User Fee to Increase in July

Water Quality Improvement is Goal
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., June 15, 2001 - A few weeks ago, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson signed an ordinance increasing the sewer user fee for all residents and businesses in Marion County using the sanitary sewer system. This fee increase comes one year after the City of Indianapolis initiated the largest public outreach campaign in the City's history. The City conducted more than 20 education and feedback meetings, provided information on the City's website and provided materials to neighborhood associations. The City received considerable input during the process of drafting its Long Term Control Plan to Fight Raw Sewage Overflows (LTCP).

On the sewer bill you receive in July, you will see an increase of 17.8% in your monthly rate. This increase equates to an average of $1.94 per month per residential customer. The City expects to raise 184 million dollars during the next 5 years as a result of the rate increase. This additional revenue will be used to pay for the first five year phase of the projects outlined in the LTCP. Specifically, the City will be able to upgrade our sewage treatment plant and begin treating more wastewater, capture more sewage before it enters our rivers and streams, and cut the ages old practice of dumping raw sewage into Indianapolis waterways.

Please share this information with your neighbors, and don't hesitate to call the Indianapolis Department of Public Works at 327-4000 if you have any questions.
