DTCA Home Archives Mail Security - Autumn 2002

Mail Security

During the DTCA General Membership meeting in September residents discussed the options the Board of Directors have in delivering newsletters, flyers, bulletins, directories, etc. to our members. Due to security, efficiency and time concerns, the DTCA Board has made the decision to rely more heavily on the U.S. Mail for these communications. With the increase of mail theft, mail tampering and identity theft in recent years and concerns from DTCA residents, please consider these tips from THE UNITED STATES POSTAL INSPECTION SERVICE to help prevent mail theft:

INSTALL A LOCKING MAILBOX:
These mailboxes allow for incoming mail to be inserted into an opening. The resident retains the key. You can purchase this type of mailbox at most home improvement stores.

PICK UP INCOMING MAIL PROMPTLY AFTER DELIVERY:
Never leave mail in your mailbox overnight.

DO NOT PLACE OUTGOING MAIL IN OR ON YOUR MAILBOX:
Choose one of the following options:

  • Hand your mail to your mail carrier
  • Deposit your mail in a blue receptacle
  • Deposit your mail at a Post Office
BE SURE TO:
  • Avoid sending cash.
  • Inform correspondents of your correct address.
  • Use Registered Mail when sending valuables.
  • Ask your bank for secure checks, which resist alteration.
  • Notify USPS when going on vacation. Call 1-800-275-8777.
  • Watch for suspicious activity at mailboxes and record license plate numbers and descriptions.
  • Report theft as soon as possible.
MAIL THEFT REWARD
The United States Postal Inspection Service offers up to a $10,000 reward for information and services leading to the arrest and conviction of any person for mail theft. Theft of mail, or even possession of stolen mail, is a Federal Felony and upon conviction each offense may be punishable by a fine up to $250,000 and imprisonment up to five years. (Title 18, United States Code, Section 1708)

To report mail theft or suspicious activity, contact The United States Postal Service at 602-223-3660 (24 hours) or 1441 e. Buckeye Road, Phoenix, AZ 85034-9133. All calls are confidential.
