Home Fire Safety

"In the excitement of the holidays, we tend to forget about safety," said David Oliver, president and executive director of the Home Safety Council.

"However, taking a few extra moments to blow out a candle and unplug your holiday lights can greatly reduce your chance of an injury and it could potentially save someone's life."

Is your home safe? Take a few minutes to review our Fire Safety Quiz and find out.

  1. Do you have a fire extinguisher on every level of your home?
  2. Do you have a fire extinguisher in your garage?
  3. Does the top floor of your home have a carbon monoxide detector?
  4. Do you check the batteries in your smoke and fire alarms monthly?
  5. Do your electrical outlets have no more than two things plugged into them?
  6. Are all of the electrical outlets in your home free from dangling cords?
  7. Do the cords on any of your appliances show signs of wear and tear? (Worn electrical cords are a fire hazard.)
  8. Are any electrical cords run under rugs or tacked to floors or walls? (This damages the cords.)
  9. Are flames well guarded in your house? (Does the fireplace have a screen and the candles have holders?)
  10. Are matches and lighters stored away from small children?
  11. Are all flammable liquids in your home stored in air tight containers?
  12. Are gasoline containers stored outside of your home?
  13. Are newspapers and oily rags properly disposed of?
  14. In the kitchen, are your potholders, towels, and other flammable items away from the stove?
  15. Do you leave the kitchen while you have food frying or broiling?
  16. Do you have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen?
  17. If your home has a fireplace, do you keep a screen in front of it to catch the flying sparks?
  18. Does your family have a home escape plan that is practiced regularly?
  19. Do you have an emergency phone numbers sticker on your telephone?
